Ghattamaneni Mahesh Babu (born:August 9, 1974 in Madras, India) is an Indian film actor.[3] He is the son of the former Telugu actor Ghattamaneni Siva Rama Krishna. He has worked in a number of critically and commercially successful films and has established himself as one of the leading actors in contemporary Telugu cinema.
He started his film career as a child actor in his father's film Needa. He made his debut as a lead actor in 1999 with Rajakumarudu (1999) and then went on to star in films such as Murari (2001), Okkadu (2003), Athadu (2005) and Pokiri (2006). He is the brand ambassador for Thumbs Up, Navratna, UniverCell, Amrutanjan[4], Provogue, Idea and Vivel[5] in Andhra Pradesh.[6][7]
Mahesh Babu was born on 9 August 1974[8] in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to actor Ghattamaneni Siva Rama Krishna and Smt. Indira Devi. He has four siblings: Ramesh Babu, Padmavathi, Manjula and a younger sister, Priyadarshini. He did his schooling at St Bede's School in Chennai and obtained an Honours Degree in Commerce (B.Com.,) from Loyola College, Chennai. Mahesh Babu acted in seven of his father's films as a child actor. His first child acting role was in the film Needa.

Mahesh dated his co-star in the movie Vamsi, Bollywood actress and former Miss India (Miss Universe India) Namrata Shirodkar for two years. They got married on February 10, 2005,[9] and have a son named Gautham Krishna.[10]

Mahesh Babu debuted in 1999 with the K. Raghavendra Rao film Raja Kumarudu opposite Preity Zinta, for which he won the Nandi Award for Best Male Debut.[11][12]
In 2000, Mahesh Babu appeared in Y.V.S Chowdary's Yuvaraju,and in Vamsi. Both movies were declared average at the box office.[13]
In 2001, he starred with Sonali Bendre in Krishna Vamsi's Murari, which emerged as a critical as well as a huge commercial success.[14] His performance earned him the Nandi Special Jury Award. His next movie Takkari Donga opened to positive reviews.[15] Mahesh's performance earned him the Nandi Special Jury Award.
Later that year, he starred with Arthi Agarwal in Bobby, directed by Sobhan.
His next film Okkadu (2003) opposite Bhoomika Chawla, produced by M.S. Raju and directed by Gunasekhar was critically acclaimed and a biggest box-office success of that year whilst earning his first Filmfare Best Actor Award (Telugu).[14][16][17] The film collected a share of 7 crores in its opening week in Andhra Pradesh.[18] In the same year, he appeared in Teja's film Nijam was critically acclaimed and earned him Nandi Award for Best Actor.[19] In 2004, Mahesh Babu paired up with Amisha Patel in S. J. Suryaah's Naani. It was simultaneously filmed in Tamil under the title New.[20][21] Later that year, he again appeared in Gunasekhar movie Arjun opposite Shriya Saran earned him another Nandi Special Jury Award.

Mahesh Babu's 2005 film, Athadu, directed by Trivikram Srinivas and starring Trisha Krishnan, was declared a sensational hit in India as well as in the USA. Athadu went on to became one of the highest earners of the year in Tollywood. [22] Mahesh Babu received his second Nandi Award for best actor for Athadu.
Mahesh Babu and Ileana D'Cruz starred in the action flick Pokiri directed by Puri Jagannadh. Pokiri was a huge financial success, emerging as the highest-grossing Telugu film in the year 2006 earning 66.5 Crores. The film completed 100 days in as many as 200 centers in Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states, including 17 centers in Hyderabad alone and silver jubilee in a record 63 centers.[23][24][25] In the same year, Mahesh Babu again starred with Trisha in Gunasekhar's film Sainikudu. While it opened well in India, it ended up as an average grosser.[26]
In October 2007, Mahesh Babu appeared with Amrita Rao in Surender Reddy's Athidhi which was a commercial Hit.[27] The film opened with a gross collection of 12.5 crores in the first week of its release.[28]
He next signed a film with Trivikram Srinivas titled Khaleja opposite Anushka Shetty. Mahesh Babu had planned to take a gap of six months after Athidhi. Due to unexpected circumstances, the film was postponed several times and took two years to be completed. Khaleja was released on 7 October 2010.[29] Despite getting mixed reviews, the film collected over 30 crores in the first two weeks.[30] and ended up being an average grosser.[31][32][33]
Mahesh Babu is filming for Sreenu Vaitla's Dookudu, after which he will be filming for Puri Jagannath's next venture, tentatively titled The Business Man. He recently announced in a social networking site that he will be working on Ponniyin Selvan with noted Indian film maker Mani Ratnam.
